While Johnson County has made a countywide disaster declaration, it DOES NOT affect Bethany SUD. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) can get into water from industrial sites, landfills, wastewater, and firefighting foams. PFAS are chemicals that are resistant to water, grease, and stains, and are sometimes called "forever chemicals" because they don't break down easily.
We do not deal with sewer mains, which can leak and cause these chemicals to enter into our water system. Nor do we have industrial sites or landfills in or near any of our water mains to allow the chemicals to enter our system.
The water that is distributed to our customers is tested daily to make sure that it is quality potable water.
We understand this is a very scary situation for everyone in the affected area.
